DEVELOPMENTAL editing for crime, thriller, mystery and suspense authors

Developmental editing

A developmental edit is an in-depth analysis of the big-picture aspects of your story that shows which elements are working and which areas need attention.

I will read through your book and once I have let my initial thoughts settle and made some notes, I will read through a second time and leave inline comments (using MS Word) alongside relevant lines or sections. From my comments and readthroughs, I will identify strengths and problem areas and will produce a report that summarises the key issues. You will be able to use the comments and report to revise your manuscript in readiness for further rounds of revision or line/copy editing.

Please note that a developmental edit does not usually include any editing within the manuscript. However, I might occasionally demonstrate how to fix something directly in the text with track changes in Word.

Price: from £20 per 1,000 words (subject to seeing whole manuscript)

For example, a novel of 71,000 words would start at £1,420.

If you would prefer a lighter developmental edit, take a look at my manuscript assessment service.

My rates are in line with the minimum hourly rates suggested by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
